Eugene B. Gerkins was born on 5/1/1912 in Cumberla $Eugene B. Gerkins was born on 5/1/1912 in Cumberland, Maryland to Chas and Elizabeth Gerkins. He was the youngest of 4 the two had together with Eugene having two older sisters and an older brother. On 7/17/1935 Eugene married Martha Louis Knight in Mineral County, West Virginia. Martha also would go to serve in Army as well being assigned to the WACs stationed in Fort Weston, Wyoming. Eugene entered the Army on 9/2/1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He completed basic training and was sent to Sicily as part of the 30th Infantry Div. While there, Pfc. Gerkins volunteered for the Rangers and was officially assigned to Baker Co. 1st Ranger Bn. on 8/29/1943 as the Battalion was preparing for the invasion of Salerno. On 9/9/1943, Pfc. Gerkins landed with the rest of the 1st Ranger bn. at Mirori, Italy. They immediately moved inland and seized the Chiunzi pass. On 9/18/1943, Pfc. Gerkins was wounded in action when he was blown off the side of a cliff and fractured his spine. Pfc. Gerkins would be officially dropped from the 1st Ranger Bn. roster on 10/23/1943. He would spend the next 3 months in a hospital recovering from his injuries. Pfc. Gerkins would never rejoin the Rangers and was discharged on 7/6/1944. Martha and Eugene would remain married until his death on 9/13/1987. He was buried at Hillcrest Burial Park in Maryland. The two never had children together but remained in the Cumberland area for the rest of their lives. Martha passed away in 2015 and was buried next to Eugene. ——————————————————————————— This grouping came into our possession in 2016. Not only does it contain a trove of newspaper clippings, a few pictures and notes from both of their service but also has a beautiful studio portrait of the two together in uniform. The Purple Heart card is missing its original patches.
